Delta Connection vs. Star Connection in Statcom:
In Statcom(Medium Voltage Static Var Generator SVG), the choice between delta connection and star connection refers to the configuration of the converter valves within the device. The main difference lies in the way the valves are connected to the AC system.
Delta Connection:
In a delta-connected Statcom, the converter valves are connected in a delta formation. This configuration is also known as a "three-level" Statcom. It offers several advantages:
Lower voltage stress on the valves due to the lower phase-to-neutral voltage.
Better current sharing between the valves, reducing thermal stresses.
Lower harmonics injected into the AC system.
Star Connection:
In a star-connected Statcom, the converter valves are connected in a star formation. This configuration is also known as a "two-level" Statcom. It has its advantages:
Simpler construction and lower cost compared to delta connection.
Each valve operates at a higher voltage, so fewer valves are required for the same rating.
Easier valve cooling due to the direct connection to the neutral point.
The choice between delta and star connection depends on various factors such as system voltage level, power rating of the Statcom, complexity requirements, cost considerations, and harmonic performance requirements.
